GEMYV is Grupo Especializado en Mareo y Vértigo (Specialized Dizziness and Vertigo Group)

Who are we?

Our team is composed of experts specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of balance disorders. They work closely with a multidisciplinary team to provide each patient with the best solutions, applying treatments supported by scientific evidence and the most advanced diagnostic and rehabilitation technology.

What do we do at GEMYV?

At GEMYV, we provide specialized medical evaluation using appropriate technical resources. This enables us to make a diagnosis based on both the patient’s information and the objective observation and measurement of the organs and structures involved in balance function. The diagnosis is carried out based on the criteria of the International Barany Society.

Having the most advanced diagnostic technology allows us to apply the most effective therapeutic options by measuring the patient’s baseline parameters and their progress during treatment.

After the medical diagnosis is established, the professionals in our Vestibular Rehabilitation service will create an individualized program based on a comprehensive functional assessment, the user’s symptoms, and mutually agreed-upon goals. In general, rehabilitation programs aim to maximize functionality, reduce symptoms, and prevent future crises.

Rehabilitation complements pharmacological treatment if it is prescribed.

Otoneurology

It is a subspecialty within otolaryngology that deals with, among other things, the diagnosis and treatment of balance disorders (vertigo, dizziness, or instability). As its name implies, the otoneurologist must have extensive knowledge in otology and neurology. The information between the ear and the brain, in addition to other sensors, is coordinated in a delicate balance that results in the sensation of balance. The otoneurologist must master the examination of the vestibulo-ocular reflex and eye movements, as well as the vestibulo-spinal reflex, and have the appropriate means to perform it. In our center, we have the necessary technology to provide a comprehensive evaluation, which, combined with an appropriate medical history, will allow us to make a diagnostic approach to your problem and, based on that, offer you the most suitable therapeutic option.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

Vestibular Rehabilitation is a specialization within physiotherapy aimed at treating balance disorders. During a vestibular rehabilitation session, the following aspects are generally addressed: gaze stabilization, improvement of gait and balance, symptom reduction, and overall physical conditioning.

To achieve these goals, various therapeutic strategies based on central nervous system plasticity and compensation principles are employed, including habituation, adaptation, and substitution.

  • Gradual exposure to symptom-provoking stimuli
  • Exercise programs designed to reduce the risk of falls
  • Specific exercises for improving the vestibular system
  • Educational programs
  • Exercises to improve dynamic visual acuity or subjective visual vertical.

Thanks to the advanced technological resources available at Corporación Rincón, the GEMYV team utilizes the latest technology for an initial functional assessment, which identifies existing deficits, and designs an individualized treatment program based on personalized multisensory stimulation.

What do we offer at our center?

We have the most cutting-edge resources, both for diagnosis and treatment:
  • VHIT (video head impulse test)
  • Videonystagmography
  • Videonystagmoscopy
  • Caloric Tests
  • VEMPs (Potenciales Evocados Miogénicos Vestibulares)
  • Multifrequency Vibrator for Vibration-Induced Nystagmus
  • Rotating Chair
  • Virtual Reality
  • Motion VR Mobile Platform

What is Vestibular Rehabilitation?

Vestibular Rehabilitation consists of a program of multisensory stimulation, based on exercises and habit modification, to improve the symptoms of patients with vestibular disorders and their functional recovery, in addition to minimizing the risk of falls and enhancing quality of life. It is based on the concept of vestibular compensation, expressed through the neuroplasticity of…

Why do I feel dizzy if the diagnostic tests indicate that everything is fine? Functional dizziness.

On many occasions, when patients arrive at our unit, they bring with them an extensive battery of diagnostic tests whose conclusion is always the same: “no pathological findings.” The first thing we need to observe (this is done by the otoneurologist) is whether the appropriate tests have been conducted to rule out any other organic…

THE ORIGIN: THE VOCATION TO TREAT PATIENTS WITH DIZZINESS

A Balance Unit for patients with dizziness, vertigo, and instability is now operational in Torre del Mar. This is made possible thanks to the collaboration of GEMYV (Specialized Group in Dizziness and Vertigo) and Manolo Rincón, a renowned entrepreneur in the healthcare sector in Málaga. This unit has its origins in Dr. Irene Mayorga, who,…
